Year Four

Dear Parents/Carers,

Routines for Year 4

Welcome back, we hope you had all had a great summer holiday!

In this letter we want to share our new expectations for homework and routines for Year 4. Children in Year 4 are expected to do a maximum of 1 and a half hours homework per week. For example, over 5 days this can be shared into 18 min slots. On the back of this letter is a suggested timetable to help you spread out the time spent doing homework.

Homework Projects

This year all classes are setting a half termly homework project. We hope these projects will give children chance to show off their arts and crafts skills as well as developing research and writing skills. The tasks will be written into their homework book for easy reference. This book will be used for spelling and times table practise too.

Swimming, PE and Uniform

All Year 4 children are now having swimming lesson every Friday until the end of the school academic year. Please make sure they bring their kit every week. Y4 PE day is Wednesday, please make sure your child has the appropriate kit ready and all uniform is clearly labelled with their name.

Reading at Home

As a school we ask that every child makes time at home to read and be listened to by an adult. In Year 4 we would like our children to read for 10 minutes every day. Your child has the opportunity to choose a book at their appropriate level which is to be taken home and returned to school every day, whether the book has been finished or not. While you or another adult are listening to your child read please take the time to make any comments in your child’s reading record and sign and date it so we can strengthen our communications between school and home. To help you further with reading at home we will send home a small booklet with hints and tips for helping your child make greater progress in reading. Miss Rosenberg and I are having a big push on reading at home and really appreciate your support in this. We are developing a reward system specifically for reading at home to further encourage the children in Year 4.

Spellings and Times Tables

A spelling list and set of times tables will be sent home on a Monday each week. These tasks will be age/level appropriate for your child. On the reverse of this letter is a list of websites and activities that can done at home to enhance the learning of spelling rules and times table facts. The sheets are to be returned every Friday. Again the children will be encouraged to meet the deadlines with a reward system.

Using IT at Home

Remember children have access to fun, engaging and educational activities via the school website http://stjameschurch.bradford.sch.uk/

Occasionally we will set Maths activities to be completed at home on MyMaths, Sum Dog, EDUCATION CITY and Snappy Sums. Your child has login details for these websites, if they have lost the details please let us know and we will send home the information again.

If you have any questions regarding homework and routines in Year 4 please have a chat with either myself or Miss Rosenberg at the end of the school day or make an appointment through the school office.

We look forward to getting to know you this year and thank you in advance for your help and support in helping our children achieve their best.

Yours sincerely

Miss Smith, Miss Rosenberg and the Year 4 team
