EYFS Physical Development in the early years.

Pupils in EYFS from two year olds through to reception receive 40 minute weekly Physical Development sessions which focus on developing movement competency in line with the EYFS three prime areas; Physical Development, Personal and Social Development and Communication and language. Each session will consist of a focused activity to develop fundamental movement skills with the following subthemes; Stability (dynamic/ static), Object control & Locomotion. Pupils have the opportunity to move with confidence, negotiate space and play cooperatively.

Curriculum Physical Education 

Within KS1 & KS2 our curriculum design has been carefully considered  to allow for a progressive skills based approach. 

We hope to achieve this by providing positive, inclusive and meaningful early experiences around physical activity.

Our pupils receive one hour of curriculum PE per week throughout key stage 1 & 2. This is taught by our internal PE specialist in line with our bespoke curriculum.

Holistic Curriculum Design: Our curriculum places equal focus on developing the whole child through each of the Social/Emotional, Psychological/ Affective and Cognitive learning domains.

Developing knowledge & competency: During this academic year (2021/22) we have began to create an assessment system which will allow pupils to make progress and develop knowledge both procedurally and declaratively. 

Pedagogical approaches/Inclusion: In terms of lesson design, significant considerations are made to ensure pupils engagement, MVPA and enjoyment levels are prioritised. This is achieved by applying the STEP principle and inclusion spectrum model to differentiate accordingly.

Regardless of starting points or SEND, we feel that pupils are able to develop their knowledge through at least one of the three pillars of physical education; Motor competency, rules/tactics and healthy behaviours/participation

Assessment for learning: Our strategies and approach to assessment for learning ensure we are supporting the needs and development of every child. Some examples of AfL within curriculum PE include;

  • Teacher modelling good practice
  • Pupil demonstrations 
  • Video analysis- self & peer reviewing
  • No opt out questioning
  • Collaborative learning- pair share/talk to your partner 
  • Instant feedback

Vocabulary: throughout the key stages we attempt to build upon our pupils language. This is achieved by displaying unit specific terminology to allow pupils to refer to and recall with specificity.  Building on pupils vocabulary is a vital tool which links directly to our focus on the different types of knowledge which can be developed in physical education.

Pupils in key stage 1 focus on extending basic fundamental movement (agility, balance & coordination) across a broad range of physical activities and modified sports. Pupils regularly work independently and in collaboration and are able to compete under pressure in competitive situations.

Pupils in key stage 2 focus developing a broader range of skills with increased accuracy and competence. Pupils will have the opportunity to use and refine skills, transferring them in multiple situations. Pupils will pay closer attention to applying tactics and knowledge of modified games and movement based activities. Pupils will learn to speak confidently about the benefits, short term and long term effects of physical activity.

Physically Active Enrichment: Our PE curriculum is extensively supplemented by our ‘Physically Active Enrichment’ offer. All pupils from within key stage 1 & 2 take part in Enrichment every Friday afternoon.  During this extra curricular opportunity, our classes are able to select from a broad menu of physical activities. Pupils, led by class teachers are able to access both non- traditional & traditional sports as well as a range of modified & alternative activities.
