What it is Sport Premium?
The government has chosen to invest in Primary School Physical Education and School Sport. They have done this by offering each primary school £8000 plus £5 per pupil to be spent in any way the school thinks best to improve the teaching and learning of PE and School Sport in their individual school.
What is the funding for?
Schools will have to spend the sport funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but they will have the freedom to choose how they do this.
Possible uses for the funding could be:
• hiring specialist PE teachers or qualified sports coaches to work alongside primary teachers when teaching PE
• new or addition Change4Life sports clubs
• paying for professional development opportunities in PE/sport
• providing cover to release primary teachers for CPD in development in PE/sport
• running sports competitions, or increasing participation in the school games
• buying quality assured professional development modules or materials for PE/sport
• providing places for pupils on after school sports clubs
We believe in providing children with a broad and balanced PE curriculum which will motivate children to lead healthy lifestyles. We believe that sports and extra-curricular clubs play an important role in promoting social inclusion, healthy lifestyles and self confidence. Children should have access to high quality PE teaching and resources which will give them a love of the subject and encourage them to participate in a range of sports and raise their achievement levels.
How are we raising our aspirations for our young people?
We have been selected to be part of a national project around working with Sport England. The aim is to provide step change in physical activity levels of children aged 5 – 14 years and their families. This is a whole systems approach, asset based which is a collaborative, sustainable and innovative. We are working with many partners such as Better Start Bradford, Active Bradford and Yorkshire Sports Trust to develop an action research programme through the support
This website provides more detail of the work we will be doing:
We will be investing over £20,000 into St James and the wider community over the next 2 years to support our pupils, staff and community to be physically active. We have also recruited a new P.E/Forest School and Play leader who will start in January 2020.
The Sainsbury’s School Games Mark
We are very proud to announce that the Academy St James has been awarded the Sainsbury’s School Games Silver Mark this year. Having gained the bronze award for last year, St James has made great strides in increasing participation in school sports both in after school clubs and local school competitions. The Sainsbury’s School Games Mark is a Government led awards scheme launched in 2012 to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community. Schools in England are able to assess themselves across bronze, silver and gold levels of the Mark.
